(31) Taking control of our own Destiny - Wisconsin’s Woodland Leadership Institute

John DuPlissis, University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point, Stevens Point, WI

Session: Concurrent session B3:  Extension Program Models

Wisconsin's Woodland Leadership Institute was developed to help woodland owners find their voice and give them some of the tools necessary to speak out and become active participants in deciding the issues that directly affect their ability to manage their woodlands.  The majority of Wisconsin’s forest land is owned by family forest owners.  Wisconsin’s forest resources are significant to the states economy and important to those who do not own woodlands for all of the benefits and services that they provide.  However, woodland owner organizations, government agencies, and Extension outreach programs have reach less than 20 percent of woodland owners.  Significant changes and decisions are made each year that affect the ability of woodland owners to own and manage their woodlands without them being heard.

The goal of the Woodland Leadership Institute is to educate and equip woodland owners and enthusiasts to become leaders in their local communities on issues related to forestry, sustainable forest management, and public policy and to help them become active in these issues at the local, regional, and statewide levels that affect their lives.  This presentation will provide an overview of the curriculum of the Woodland leadership Institute and the work that some of some of its graduates have been engaged in.
